Profile
Edward VIII (Edward Albert Christian George Andrew Patrick David; 23 June 1894 – 28 May 1972) was King of the United Kingdom and the Dominions of the British Empire, and Emperor of India, from 20 January 1936 until his abdication on 11 December of that year.

The eldest son of King George V and Queen Mary, he was created Prince of Wales on his sixteenth birthday, nine weeks after his father succeeded as king. As a young man, he served in the British Army during the First World War and undertook several overseas tours on behalf of his father.

Edward became king on his father's death in early 1936. Only months into his reign, he caused a constitutional crisis by proposing to Wallis Simpson, an American who had divorced her first husband and was seeking a divorce from her second. The prime ministers of the United Kingdom and the Dominions opposed the marriage, arguing a divorced woman with two living ex-husbands was politically and socially unacceptable as a prospective queen consort. Additionally, such a marriage would have conflicted with Edward's status as the titular head of the Church of England, which at the time disapproved of remarriage after divorce if a former spouse was still alive. Edward abdicated and was succeeded by his younger brother, George VI. With a reign of 326 days, Edward is one of the shortest-reigning monarchs in British history.

After his abdication, Edward was created Duke of Windsor. He married Wallis Simpson, Duchess of Windsor in France on 3 June 1937, after her second divorce became final. Later that year, the couple toured Germany. During the Second World War, he was at first stationed with the British Military Mission to France, but after private accusations that he held Nazi sympathies, he was appointed Governor of the Bahamas. After the war, Edward spent the rest of his life in retirement in France. Edward and Wallis remained married until his death in 1972.

THE STYLE
“I was in fact produced as a leader of fashion, with the clothiers as my showmen and the world as my audience.”

-HRH Duke of Windsor
Duke of Windsor's style code: He values comfort before anything else, and preferred wearing unstructured even unlined jackets to the traditional suits, and called it "dress soft", and and he loved color, texture and pattern, in particularly checks,  a supposedly faux pas for a man of his stature but he managed to look regal in the loud checked outfits.

Rewriting the history of one England’s most famous love affairs Wallis Simpson found herself at the centre of a national scandal when she was seen to ensnare Edward VIII and lure him from the throne of England. But in this explosive film, biographer Anne Sebba sifts through a newly discovered cache of documents - shown in this film for the first time - that contains 15 secret letters written by Wallis Simpson herself around the time ofthe abdication. These extraordinary personal missives have the power to rewrite both history and our perception of Wallis. They reveal she was deeply in love with another man, and chart her fear, desperation and loneliness as she found herself becoming trapped into marrying the man who should have been king.

Documentary which sheds new light on the greatest crisis to rock the British monarchy in centuries - the abdication of King Edward VIII. Usually it has been presented as the only possible solution to his dilemma of having to choose between the throne and the woman he loved. Using secret documents and contemporary diaries and letters this film shows a popular monarch whose modern ideas so unsettled the establishment that his love for Wallis Simpson became the perfect excuse to bounce him off the throne.
English:

The history of his reign is in large part the history of the abdication. However, as Prince of Wales, Edward had been the first heir to the throne to find a genuine role for himself, as a spokesmen for the ex-service generation. His Prime Minister, Stanley Baldwin, said that he had a wider and more intimate knowledge of all classes of his subjects --- than any of his predecessors. The abdication, often regarded as a constitutional crisis, in fact resolved a crisis which never became constitutional, since Edward did not allow any constitutional differences to arise between him and his ministers or between him and Parliament.

On this episode of The Dark Side we look into the life of King Edward VIII, uncle to Queen Elizabeth II, and how his actions during his short reign nearly destroyed the reputation of the Crown. His scandalous love affair that led to his swift abdication was only topped by his secret allegiance to Adolf Hitler and the Nazi party during World War II.
