Roberto Bolle (born March 26, 1975 in Casale Monferrato) is an Italian danseur. He is currently a principal dancer with the American Ballet Theatre and a principal dancer étoile at La Scala Theatre Ballet. Bolle also dances regularly as a guest artist with the world’s leading companies, including The Royal Ballet, the Mariinsky Ballet, the Bolshoi Ballet and the Paris Opera Ballet.
1975: birth
Roberto Bolle was born in Casale Monferrato, a town in the Piedmont region in Italy, in the province of Alessandria which is situated about 60 km (37 mi) east of Turin.
1986: Ballet School of La Scala Theatre in Milan
Roberto Bolle entered the Ballet School of La Scala Theatre in Milan, Italy.
1990: Rudolf Nereyev
The legendary Russian ballet dancer Rudolf Nereyev staged his production of Nutcracker in La Scala Theatre and noticed the then 15 year old Roberto Bolle, he decided to choose him as Tazio for his ballet production Death in Venice.
1996: Romeo and Principle dancer
In 1996, following an appearance in Romeo and Juliet, 20 year old Bolle was promoted to principal dancer at La Scala. He left that position when he was 21 to pursue a freelance career. Since then he has starred in many ballets including Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake, Cinderella, The Nutcracker, Giselle, La Esmeralda, and In the Middle, Somewhat Elevated.
1997: Swanlake and Princess Diana
In 1997, Roberto Bolle performed Sigfried of Swan Lake with international star Altinai Asylmuratova at English concert hall, thus had the chance to meet British Royal family, including Princess Margaret and Princess Diana.
1999: UNICEF ambassador
2004: Pope John Paul II
On 1 April 2004 Roberto Bolle danced in front of the Pope John Paul II in St. Peter's Square in Rome to celebrate World Youth Day.
2006: Winter Olympic
In February 2006 Bolle danced during the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympic Games of Turin, which was broadcast live worldwide.
2007: Debut at MET
In 2007 Roberto Bolle danced “Romeo and Juliet.” with Alessandra Ferri for her farewell performance as professional ballerina, which was Roberto's first time dancing in Metropolitan Opera House in New York.
2009: The World Economic Forum appointed Roberto Bolle "Young Global Leader".
2012: Cavaliere dell'Ordine al Merito della Repubblica Italiana
In November 2012 Roberto Bolle was appointed Cavaliere dell’Ordine al Merito della Repubblica Italiana by Giorgio Napolitano, the President of the Italian Republic, for his support to the Italian culture.
2014: Unesco Medal
In 2014 Roberto Bolle was awarded the Unesco Medal, conferred in Paris, for the universal cultural value of his artistic work, “in recognition of his contribution to the promotion of the ideas of Unesco through dance as a living cultural expression and as a vector for dialogue”.
