María Sonsoles de Icaza y de León nació el 13 de agosto de 1914 en Ávila, provincia de Ávila, Castilla y León, España. Fue la hija menor del matrimonio formado por Francisco Asís de Icaza y Beña y Beatriz de León y Loynaz. Su padre era embajador mexicano y reconocido poeta, y su madre una española, sobrina de Doña María del Pilar de León y Gregorio, I Marquesa de Squilache. El matrimonio tuvo seis hijos.
El 28 de mayo de 1925, cuando contaba con 10 años, su padre fallece y la familia comienza a tener problemas económicos. Su hermana María del Carmen decide ayudar económicamente a la familia y comienza a escribir primero en periódicos y más adelante novelas con las que alcanza gran popularidad.

El 12 de febrero de 1936, con 21 años, Sonsoles contrae matrimonio con Francisco de Paula Díez de Rivera y Casares, marqués de Llanzol, 24 años mayor que ella. El matrimonio tuvo tres hijos: Sonsoles, Francisco y Antonio.
En 1940 inicia una relación extramatrimonial con el entonces Ministro de Asuntos Exteriores Ramón Serrano Suñer, casado con la hermana de la mujer de Francisco Franco. En 1942 Sonsoles tiene una hija extramatrimonial Carmen Díez de Rivera, que sin embargo será reconocida por su marido como propia; el matrimonio nunca se separó. Sonsoles y Ramón mantuvieron su relación durante casi dos décadas, hasta que la hija de ambos anunció su noviazgo con el hijo menor de Ramón, su medio hermano. Fue entonces cuando ambos descubrieron el parentesco que les unía.
Fue amiga del diseñador de alta costura Cristóbal Balenciaga, de quien fue musa y le diseñó incluso los vestidos de comunión de sus hijas. Era considerada una de las mujeres más elegantes de España.
Sonsoles falleció a los 81 años, el 21 de enero de 1996 en Madrid.

María Sonsoles de Icaza y de León was born in Ávila, Castilla y León, Spain. Her father was Mexican ambassador and well known poet and her mother a Spanish aristocratic woman, whose aunt is the first Countess of Squilache.
In 1925, when she was 10 years old, Sonsoles de Icaza lost her father and the family started to have economic problems. Her older sister María del Carmen decided to help the family financially by writing for newspapers and then writing novels which became very popular and was acclaimed as the writer of the year in 1945.

On 12 February 1936, Sonsoles married Francisco de Paula Díez de Rivera y Casares, marqués de Llanzol(the marquis of Llanzol), 24 years older than her. They have three children:Francisco Díez de Rivera y Antonio Díez de Rivera and Sonsoles Díez de Rivera who is currently president of Cristobal Balenciaga foundation.

Sonsoles de Icaza is considered the most elegant woman of her time in Spain, and great muse and friend of Cristóbal Balenciaga, one of the greatest couturiers in fashion history who not only dressed La Marquesa de Llanzol, who exclusively wears his clothes, but also her daughters for the the ceremonies like their costume for communions and weddings.
On 21 January 1996, Sonsoles de Icaza, Marquesa de Llanzol, died in Madrid, Spain, at the age of 81.
In 2013, Spanish novelist Nieves Herrrero wrote a novel Lo que escondían sus ojos inspired by the love story of Sonsoles de Icaza, which is in turn made into a mini TV series by Telecinco in 2016.

In 2016, Mediaset España produced Lo que escondían sus ojos, a mini TV Series based on the Spanish writer Nieves Herrero's novel of same title, it tells the love story of Ramón Serrano Suñer, the brother-in-law of Spanish dictator Francisco Franco and Sonsoles de Icaza, la Marquesa consorte de Llanzol, which became a scandal in the most exclusive circle of high society.
