On 14 January 2024, Queen Margrethe II abdicated the throne, her elder son, Crown Prince Frederik, became King Frederik X of Denmark. And his wife, Crown Princess of Mary, now is the Queen of Denmark. Just moments after Queen Margrethe II’s abdication, the new King and Queen appeared on the balcony of Christiansborg Palace in Copenhagen. The Australian-born Danish Queen looked elegant and graceful in a simple white long-sleeved A-line midi dress with a mock shawl detail around the neck. Her dress was designed by Danish designer Soeren Le Schmidt and was sewn by Birgit Hallstein, the same seamstress who made her iconic Uffe Frank wedding gown. According to the designer, the dress ‘is constructed with a separate waist belt that has a voluminous drape from the waist, around the neck, and over one shoulder.' Dr Giselle Bastin, royal expert at Flinders University thinks that white is traditionally worn by women of the royal household at coronations to represent 'renewal and the purity of the Crown'. The Queen worn red ruby earrings and a brooch from a priceless Ruby Set commissioned by Napoleon for the late Queen of Sweden in 1804 for his coronation, which made their way to the Danish royal family when the Swedish queen's daughter married the future King Frederik VIII in 1869.
Since her marriage to Prince Frederik in 2004, Mary has been the only one wearing the Ruby Set. The combination of white of her dress and red of her jewelry is a sweet homage to the Danish flags of the same colours.

In her New Year's Eve speech broadcast on TV on 31st 2023, Queen Margrethe II of Denmark announced her abdication on 14 January 2024 after her 52 year reign as Queen of Denmark. "I will leave the throne to my son Crown Prince Frederik," she announced.
On 14 Jan 1972, Princess Margrethe became Queen of Margrethe II Alf Denmark after the death of her father King Frederik IX.
After the death of Queen Elizabeth II in September 2022, Queen Margrethe, now 83 years old. is the world's only reigning queen and the longest-serving monarch in Europe. She is also the longest-sitting monarch in Denmark’s history.
The Queen is well known for her passion of archaeology and art.
After graduating in philosophy at Copenhagen University in 1960, Princess Margrethe studied archaeology at the University of Cambridge, England in 1960-1961 and earned a Diploma in Prehistoric Archaeology. Since then, she has participated in multiple excavations at home and abroad. The Queen was also well known for her love of the arts, and she is a versatile artist in her own sake: costume designs, scenography, illustrations, church textiles, découpage works, embroidery, and paintings. And she is an accomplished artist in scenography and costume design. She has been part of the artistic team behind a ballet performance at Tivoli more than 8 times. In 2021, The Queen designed costumes and scenography for the Snow Queen in Tivoli.
Perhaps due to her love of costume design, Queen Margrethe has a tendency of bold colors and daring designs in her own outfits, to such an extent that her style can be better described as brave rather than elegant. But through out her life, both as a princess and after she became the queen, she did show her inner elegance once in a while. And when she did, she shined with her regally tall figure.
